Wilton Manors didn't happen by accident
Wilton Manors is about two square miles, and it's been one of the best-known LGBTQ+ communities in the US for decades. In the 2010 census it had the second-highest share of same-sex couple households of any American city, after Provincetown, and in 2018 it elected an all-LGBTQ+ city commission. Wilton Drive is the social heart of it.
All that history means the informal network is unusually strong. A name passed on over dinner on Wilton Drive, a plumber three neighbours already use. But it mostly lives in people's heads, not online. If you're new, your usual person just retired, or the AC dies in August, you're typing "gay electrician near me Fort Lauderdale" and hoping.
Why people settle here, and what it means for hiring
Plenty of people move to South Florida to retire. Warm winters and no state income tax help. For a lot of LGBTQ+ retirees, so does not having to re-explain a forty-year relationship to every new professional. So wills, powers of attorney and long-term care plans come up a lot here, and the right attorney matters more than it might elsewhere.
What the weather demands
Hurricane season and year-round humidity mean South Florida homes go through contractors, electricians and plumbers fast. Storm shutters, AC units that give out in August, roofs that need attention after every season. You'll need more than one tradesperson, more than once.
Before anyone starts work in Florida
- Check the state licence. Plumbers, electricians, roofers and general contractors in Florida need a state licence. Look them up on the Florida DBPR licence search before you hire.
- Be careful after a storm. That's when unlicensed crews knock on doors. Florida treats unlicensed contracting during a declared state of emergency as a felony, which tells you how common it is. Don't pay a stranger up front for storm repairs.
- Ask who's pulling the permit. Most electrical, plumbing, roofing and structural work needs a city permit. A licensed contractor pulls it. If they ask you to pull it as the owner, that's a warning sign.
- Ask for proof of insurance. Liability cover and, for crews, workers' compensation. A good contractor will send certificates without fuss.
Trade by trade
Plumbers. Humidity and old pipework don't mix, and problems rarely wait politely. Check the licence before the Tuesday-night emergency, not during it.
Electricians. Storm prep and post-outage repairs mean someone in your home more than once. Worth knowing in advance who's licensed and good at this.
Contractors. Kitchen remodel or storm damage, renovations here run long. A contractor who treats your household as unremarkable from day one changes the tone of a project that might stretch for months.
Attorneys and accountants. Wills, joint finances and long-term care planning are specialist work. Check an attorney on the Florida Bar's member search, and ask whether they've done estate planning for same-sex couples before.
What the directory does, and what it doesn't
The LGBTQ+ Professionals directory on Among Our People lists tradespeople and professional services across Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors, turning the network everyone already relies on into something you can search.
Every professional chooses how much to have checked. Some have an ID Verified badge, which means they've passed an identity check with a photo ID and a selfie. Some also have a credential badge, which means they've uploaded a diploma or qualification and we've checked it matches their name and their trade. Many listings have neither, and that's their choice.
A badge tells you who someone is and that their paperwork is real. It can't tell you how good their work is, whether they're insured today, or whether they hold the licence Florida requires. So do those checks too, every time.
Nobody's asked to prove anything about who they are to use it. It's self-declaration, the same as everywhere on Among Our People.
Questions people actually ask down here
Is the directory mostly for retirees?
No, it's for everyone. But if you're planning a will or long-term care, start looking for an attorney early rather than during a crisis.
Does it cover Wilton Manors specifically?
Search by your area. How many listings you'll see depends on who's signed up near you so far.
Does a badge mean you've vetted the work?
No. Badges confirm identity and, where shown, a qualification document. They aren't a review of anyone's workmanship.
Do I have to prove I'm LGBTQ+ to use this?
No. Self-declaration is enough for everyone, everywhere on Among Our People.
